Retro Games Night - What Happens When You Mix Alcohol & SNES!
Back on 5th September 2014, myself and Peter decided to have a night of competition, boozing and old-school gaming all rolled into one. Dubbed Retro Games Night, and documented on both Twitter and Instagram, we engaged in battle in various SNES games, with Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and homemade Jagerbombs to help see us through! Below is a write-up of said festivities. Enjoy!

Games Played & Results
Unofficial Warm-Up
WWF Super WrestleMania – After Will demolished Peter in two
separate matches, the game was not recognised as part of the evening’s
festivities. Will let this slide, full of confidence in his own skills at Mario
games. His confidence was misplaced…
Street Fighter 2 – There is minimal records to the
events of the first game of the evening, Street Fighter 2. However, it is a
very good bet that the forfeit for losing each round was a Jagerbomb, going off
memory. The only record of this event is Will’s post on Twitter, stating “Pete
wins hat trick. Damn it.” Damn it, indeed. Winner:
Peter
Super Mario World – This game was lovingly nicknamed
‘Super JD World’ on this night. One person played a level, the other had to
down their JD & Coke before it was completed. Best of 5 levels, the loser
of each level has to down a Jagerbomb! Peter got worst overall times per level
than Will, however he only died once AND Will didn’t finish his Jagerbomb in
time laughing too hard, meaning Peter won the round… on a technicality. Winner: Peter
Super Mario Kart – Dubbed ‘Super JD Kart’ after the
previous round Jagerbombs were stopped this round. Once again, very little is
known about these proceedings, but the alcohol was beginning to take its toll…
and Will lost, again. Winner: Peter
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island –
A simple goal –
complete the level in the fastest time, loser does a JD shot. Will recounts
this round on Instagram with: “Did my time in 1m52 seconds, let’s see Pete beat
that!!” – Pete did. Will has to drink a shot of JD as punishment… with no ice. Winner: Peter
Resident Evil 5 – Will & Pete had to beat 100,000
on Mercenaries Mode. They did through blurry vision & passed out whilst
listening to Coldplay. This capped off the evening & the first ever

FRIDAY, JANUARY 15th 2016 - #RetroGamesNightII
The time is
finally upon us! After 16 months of anticipation, the second #RetroGamesNight
is here, and this time, it’s war! The Jagerbombs may or may not be involved,
but Jack Daniels and Glenfiddich damn sure will be, as reigning champ Peter
defends his crown against the challenge of Will (yep!).
A lot has
changed since September 2014 – both men now own next-gen consoles in the form
of Playstation 4, and there is a new addition to the Bright household in
Jacob – BUT, one thing remains the same… Old School Is Cool, and the Super
Nintendo Entertainment System is getting busted out once again!
#RetroGamesNightII –
Schedule
ROUND I – STREET FIGHTER 2
Keeping with
tradition from the first event, the night will open as it did before, with a Best
of 3 showdown of one of the best fighting games of all time. Forfeit pending,
but possibly a shot of some kind to keep with the rules of event one.
ROUND II – LEGEND
A newcomer
to #RetroGamesNight, Pete and Will completed this game last year in one
sitting… but it wasn’t easy! Amount of levels played is negotiable, but each
time your character dies, either a drink or shot is in order!
ROUND III – LAWNMOWER MAN
Another
newcomer to #RetroGamesNight, the notoriously hard Lawnmower Man will test Pete
and Will big time, as every time they die, a drink or shot is in order. At this
stage in the game, alcohol may be taking its toll, and this game is hard enough
sober!
ROUND IV – MARIO MADNESS
There is no
shortage of Mario games at the competitors disposal, with Super Mario World,
Yoshi’s Island, All Stars and Mario Kart all available. Our esteemed judges
will choose a game at random and choose an appropriate forfeit for the loser!
ROUND V – SUPER METROID
A huge
favourite, forfeits will be determined on the night – rule could be Two
Players-One Controller, an idea taken from AGDQ 2016?! I think so.Once again, the event will be documented on Twitter (@SaveUsWP and @PJIBright) and Instagram (@SAVEUSWP), using the hashtag #RetroGamesNightII. Anybody who is a fan of classic videogames, boozing/partying, or just seeing a bunch of mates having a really fun evening, do check it out.
IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!
